Effects of Density on Vehicle Miles Travelled

A study by Reid Ewing shows that “if you double density you’ll get a five to 10 percent reduction in vehicle miles traveled.”

“The best way to minimize driving appears to be to develop in existing centers near the core of the metropolitan area, in areas of high destination accessibility where there are a whole lot of jobs nearby.”
